Canadian Mining Magazine Cover Photo - Spring 2012 - Manitoba Industry Photographer

I had a nice surprise after getting home from Australia, to find that I have the cover of the current Spring 2012 edition of Canadian Mining Magazine. The featured images are from a visit to the gold mine I shot right before I left Canada for the year. I had been doing quite a bit of work in the mining and agriculture industry before I left, and hope to shoot a lot more in these sectors now that I am back.

I remember during this shoot, after the first bar of gold was poured, someone had joked to me that If I could pick up the bar with one hand, and could carry it off the premises, I could keep it. Little did I know that this unrefined brick, weighed close to 80 lbs, and was worth several million dollars.

That is what I love about my job. I am constantly exposed to very interesting and rare events, such as this gold brick pouring, an event which doesn't happen very often, and when it does, very few people get to be in the tiny room to witness it.

I feel very fortunate to be able to do the work I do, and owe a lot to my amazing clients and colleagues.

2nd Place Portrait - News Photographers Association of Canada

As you may know, I have been working and traveling in Australia and New Zealand for the past year.

Just a few days before I left in June 2011, I attended the News Photographers Association of Canada annual conference in my hometown of Winnipeg. At the Gala Awards night, I was awarded with 2nd place in the Portrait/Personality for a photograph of Jockey Marc Fillion with his horse at his home and ranch in St. Malo, Manitoba September 9, 2010. The photo was taken for TROT Magazine. I am very proud of this photograph, and very honoured to be included in the winners list with some of Canada's best photographers.

I am just updating my blog with this award, as I did not have time to post prior to leaving Canada. This was for work shot in 2010, awarded in May 2011.

Following around U2 in Winnipeg - David Lipnowski, Winnipeg Photographer

As you may know, I have been working and traveling in Australia and New Zealand for the past year. I just returned to working back in Winnipeg. So if you are looking for a photographer, be sure to send me an email!

One of my last assignments for the Winnipeg Free Press before I left was one of my favourite; photographing U2 on several occasions in Winnipeg. I first photographed them getting off the plane, then at the Burton Cummings Theatre, as well as the concert at Canad Inns Stadium.

I had given Free Press reporter Aldo Santin an interview about the experience of photographing them on the day they arrived:

"You too could have got close to U2 if you had been at the airport or Burton Cummings Theatre tonight. About a dozen Winnipeggers were thrilled when the Irish rockers walked off their tour jet on the west side of the Winnipeg’s airport to sign autographs and pose for photographs — albeit on the other side of a chain- link fence. "Bono immediately came from the plane and made a bee-line right to the fence to greet the fans there," Winnipeg Free Press freelance photographer David Lipnowski said.
"He showed genuine interest in people. And then The Edge joined him as well." The band then jumped into the lead cars of a 12-vehicle entourage and drove to the downtown theatre. "They got out to meet the 250 to 300 people at the rear of the theatre," Lipnowski said. "They spent 15 to 20 minutes signing autographs, hugging people, and posing for photos... Bono said to a couple of children ‘when I grow up I want to be like you’ and pointed to them. "Then they went into the back entrance of the theatre and that was it." U2 play Winnipeg Stadium on Sunday." - Winnipeg Free Press - 05/27/2011
